You can be very creative but as a designer you are NOT an artist. Your work has a job to do and that is to sell or promote. The creativity has to come 2nd to that. Sometimes a brief requires you to actively put a hold on the creativity (Tesco value packaging design for instance, has been reduced to the absolute basics for a reason. They know what they're doing there). If you're only in this game to make pretty pictures then you need to ask yourself why you're a trying to be designer and not an artist.
